ABOUT KA WAEWAE TĀTAHI O TE AWA TUPUA
Ka Waewae Tātahi is an annual river relay event held along the Whanganui River Road, bringing whānau, uri, organisations, and the wider community together to move collectively alongside Te Awa Tupua. Participants run, walk, or support as individuals or teams, completing relay legs in a shared journey that promotes health and wellbeing, connection, and collective strength.
More than an event, Ka Waewae Tātahi is an opportunity for people to reconnect with the awa, with each other, and with the kaupapa that binds us.

LEG 1: Pipiriki to Patiārero
12km - Hard
Starting at the Paraweka Marae entrance, this is the most challenging leg of the course, covering approximately 8km of steady climbs and undulating hills.
The leg begins with a 1.2km gradual incline, descending to the Upokonui one-lane bridge before a short flat section. The route then climbs again, levelling out onto a plateau followed by rolling hills through to the Waimarino Stream Bridge, finishing with a 2.5km downhill.
LEG 4: Matahiwi to Koriniti
7.8km - Moderate
Departing Matahiwi, the leg begins with a 1.4km gentle downhill, followed by a series of undulating hills. A challenging 1.1km climb leads to the Operiki one-lane bridge, before finishing at the driveway entrance.
LEG 7: Parikino to Pungarehu
2.7km - Easy
A mostly flat and welcoming final leg, with just a small rise along the way. Teams are asked to regroup at the woolshed before Pungarehu so they can cross the finish line together.
LEG 2: Hiruharama to Ranana
5.5km - Moderate
A mostly flat leg with a slight incline leading to the one-way bridge, followed by a gentle climb. The route continues through rolling terrain and finishes on a gradual incline.
Composite teams: This is a compulsory walking leg.
LEG 5: Koriniti to Atene
10.8km - Moderate
From the Koriniti driveway, the leg starts with a slight climb toward the Flying Fox, levelling out before another gentle ascent. As the road narrows, participants will need to move single file — this is the most challenging section of the leg.
The course then continues with rolling hills, finishing at the marae entrance.
LEG 3: Ranana to Matahiwi
5.2km - Moderate
A gentle climb out of Rānana leads into a downhill section. Around the 2km mark, the course crosses a one-lane bridge. The route then climbs past Kawana Mill before descending to the Motuaruhe one-lane bridge, finishing with a slight incline into Matahiwi
LEG 6: Atene to Parikino
11.6km - Moderate
This leg begins with 2km of undulating hills, followed by a 1km climb. After a brief flat section, the route continues with rolling terrain and a downhill to the Pitangi one-lane bridge, before climbing again and winding through to Whauteihi Bridge.
A narrow road with a slight uphill lead into a flat finish at Parikino.
