RACE DAY BRIEF

1. HEALTH & SAFETY

  1. If you or any of your team members have known medical conditions, please ensure you bring any required medication (e.g. asthma inhaler).

  2. We strongly recommend undertaking some form of training to prepare for this event.

  3. By entering this event, teams give permission for Te Oranganui to take photos of individuals and teams during the event for promotional purposes.

  4. For safety reasons, children under 11 years of age are NOT permitted to participate.

  5. Each team will receive a team race number and a high-visibility vest. The vest must be always worn by the active participant on the road.

  6. All teams have a maximum of 10 hours to complete the event.

2. TRAFFIC

  1. The Whanganui River Road is an open public road. Participants must run or walk on the right-hand side of the road unless directed otherwise by marshals.

  2. Support vehicle drivers must use designated parking areas only. Do not drive alongside participants.

  3. Always maintain safe driving practices.

  4. Each team is limited to one support vehicle for safety purposes.

3. ROAD CONDITIONS

  1. Be aware of possible slips, uneven surfaces and loose gravel along the route.

  2. Please consider weather conditions. Warm temperatures are expected. Hats, sunblock, adequate fluids and kai are highly recommended.

4. FIRST AID

  1. First Aid kits will be available at each official transition point.

  2. A Nurse will travel in the safety vehicle along the route.

5. MARSHALS

  1. Marshals will be present throughout the event.

  2. Marshals will be stationed at each transition point, with additional marshals travelling along the route in support vehicles.

  3. There will NOT be a marshal stationed at split leg transitions. Teams are responsible for managing their own changeover at split legs.

6. TRANSITIONS & SPLIT LEGS

  1. Porta-loos will be available at the Koriniti and Atene transition points.

  2. The marae wharepaku will be available for transition stations where there’s no portaloo.

  3. Split Transition Legs – Legs 1, 5 and 6

  • Certain legs of the event are designated as split legs.

  • Runner/Walker 1 begins the leg from the official transition.

  • At approximately the halfway point, there will be a clearly marked split transition sign.

  • Runner/Walker 2 must be waiting at this marked point.

  • Runner/Walker 1 stops at the split sign.

  • Runner/Walker 2 immediately continues the leg from that point to the next official transition.

  • There is no marshal at the split transition. Teams must coordinate timing and positioning carefully.

  • Catch Up Leg – Matahiwi. From 11.30am onwards, if your team member has not reached the Matahiwi transition, marshals will allow the next participant to begin the following leg if your team chooses to do so.

  • When parking at Pungarehu Marae, vehicles must be parked on the RIGHT-HAND SIDE as you enter the gates. No cars are to be parked alongside the houses.

  • Teams are welcome to set up a gazebo at the finish line if desired.

  • ALL HI VIS MUST BE RETURNED WHEN RECEIVING YOUR MEDAL

FINAL REMINDER

All vehicles and supporters not starting from this location, please make your way to the next drop off point now. This will help prevent bottlenecks between here and Hiruharama.
